Have you got family and friends coming to stay in our beautiful part of the world this summer? Why not support our brilliant local businesses whilst they’re here?
WHERE TO STAY
Pen-Y-Fedw cottage – This delightful log cabin and cottage boasts a beautiful view of the Ceiriog Valley and Berwyn mountains to start each day on a high, quite literally. Both the cosy little cottage and Canadian-style log cabin have access to their own private hot tubs overlooking the spectacular Welsh countryside.
The Hand Hotel at Llanarmon – Countryside lovers can also find themselves a home away from home at The Hand at Llanarmon. Not only is the hotel itself a welcoming and comfortable stay, but the restaurant is renowned for its award-winning food and will, without a doubt, provide your guests with memorable mouth-watering moments. The Hand’s newly launched Pumphouse Spa is an unmissable treat for those looking to relax and unwind in stunning surroundings.

WHAT TO DO
Velvet Hills – There’s no better way to show off the extraordinary views we’re blessed with to your visitors than by taking them on a guided, or self-guided, walk organised by the friendly and experienced team at Velvet Hills. Sarah and her fellow guides offer a variety of different routes for beginners to experienced walkers, all of which take in the spectacular scenery of the Dee Valley, Ceiriog Valley and surrounding panorama.
Oswestry Balloon Carnival – This free festival takes place on the weekend of 24th-25th August and sees over 30 hot air balloons set off for a birds eye view of the Ceiriog Valley’s nearest Shropshire town. The carnival taking place at Cae Glas Park, Oswestry includes family entertainment, music and a street market. Saturday evening’s ‘Night Glow Spectacular’ from 8pm will see the many balloons light up the night-time sky in a frankly, flaming fantastic display! An event for all the family that’s not to be missed.

WHERE TO SHOP
The Old Cowshed – Make sure your guests leave with a souvenir by taking them up to The Old Cowshed, open every Saturday 10am-4pm. Here, you’ll find a range of products hand-made by one of 10 local artisan craftmakers. Most ply their trade within 20 miles of this delightful heritage barn. There’s also a range of Fairtrade and reclaimed wood gifts and homeware items too. Set back along a dinky lane from the main B4500 road between Pontfadog and Dolywern, you can tie in this stop during a walk. Carol and Alma will welcome you with a warm smile, free tea or coffee… and a chocolate biscuit! The Old Cowshed is dog friendly, so you’re sure to get an equally warm wag from Millie the spaniel too.
Fine Things – The window displays at Fine Things Home & Gift shop are a stand out feature of this little oasis of loveliness in Chirk. Owner Lee’s window and shop dressing skills provide a treat for the eye whether you’re just passing through or browsing for a while. In fact, wherever your onward destination may be, make sure you take a few moments to pop into Fine Things before you and your guests head out further afield. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into an Aladdin’s cave of treasures. Lee’s classy yet affordable product range includes homeware, soft furnishings, candles, throws, womenswear, jewellery, bags, scarves and accessories.
We’re truly blessed with fantastic local businesses that showcase the best of what the Ceiriog Valley and Chirk has to offer, not just to us lucky locals but those who visit this special place… and upon leaving, can’t wait to return and experience once more our little piece of heaven on Earth.
